Hotel Higgins Landing

An award winning eco-resort located on Stocking Island, Exuma. No cars, no roads, just miles of white sand beaches. In 1997 Hotel Higgins Landing was awarded Islands Magazine's Eco tourism award, naming it the best eco tourism resort in the Bahamas and one of the four best in the Caribbean.

This small – only four cottages – resort on Stocking Island in Exuma, Bahamas, is one of those places you’ve seen in your dreams, a castaway’s island with white beaches, silver palms and quaint cottages so close to the ocean you can almost taste the salt water. Welcome to Hotel Higgins Landing, an adult-only resort on tiny Stocking Island, carefully preserved so there are no cars and no roads. Only miles of white sand beaches.

Many people consider Stocking Island a national treasure because of its unique location. On one side of the 4 ½-mile island, hotel guests enjoy the shimmering sands of Silver Palms Beach, where the reefs beckon snorkelers to explore. On the oppose side of the hotel, you get Turtle Lagoon, popular for bonefishing or kayaking. Make your way across Turtle Lagoon, and you’ll explore even more lagoons, Mystery Cave or the famous Blue Hole, once a dive site for Jacques Cousteau.

But the most popular destination is the world-famous living stromatolites, the oldest living form of life on earth. These rare creatures – estimated to be about 2,000 years old – can be seen on Stocking Island, Lee Stocking Island, the Exuma Cays Land and Sea Park. Throughout the resort, more than 50 native plants and trees are identified by name and a description of their significance.

Guests also keep coming back year after year, to experience the romance of Stocking Island and Higgins Hotel, where dinner begins with appetizers on the beach at sunset, followed by specially prepared gourmet, multi-course meals served by candlelight at the hotel restaurant. It’s an event in and of itself.

There’s more than 700 feet of beach at the hotel resort, which is directly on Silver Palms Beach, a popular spot for shelling.

Hotel Higgins is an eco-resort, one of only two eco-resorts on the Out Islands of the Bahamas. The hotel, which is spread out over several areas, was built entirely by hand, utilizing no heavy equipment. While it took more than three years to complete, Hotel Higgins implemented the first commercial solar equipment system and first composting toilet system in the Bahamas. In 1997, Islands Magazine awarded Hotel Higgins as the best eco-resort in the Bahamas and one of the four best in the Caribbean.
